2009 ESOL Teacher of the Year
On March 18, 2009, Tamara Kirson received the 2009 ESOL Teacher of the Year award from The New York Times. Ms. Kirson, a lead instructor and staff developer for The City College of New York, Adult Literacy Program, Adult and Continuing Education, was given an award and $2500.
The Times also recognized three honorees, Ludmila Ellis, Westchester Community College, the English Language Institute; Rosemarie Parreno, Hostos Community College; and Nestor
Tebio, Catholic Charities and HANAC. For his leadership in the ESOL/Adult Literacy field,
Michael Hunter of the University Settlement Society of NY received a special acknowledgement. (More about Tamara Kirson and the honorees...)
Many TESOL professionals, New York State TESOL members and students of the honorees attended the event. Elke Savoy, NYS TESOL board member, was on the selection committee for this year’s award.
